What makes a geode dice set

A geode forms when a cavity in rock slowly fills with mineral crystals, so cracking one open reveals a glittering interior hidden behind a plain shell. Geode dice reproduce that contrast deliberately: a hand-painted core is built up inside each die to mimic the crystal cavity, then sealed under clear resin so it stays sharp and catches the light from every facet.

Because the cores are painted by hand rather than moulded, no two dice match. Two D20s from the same set will have their crystal seams running at different angles, and the depth of colour shifts as you turn them. That is the appeal, and it is also why these sit at the premium end of the range rather than alongside standard resin sets.

The seven-piece sets are sharp edge: crisp corners and flat faces that show the core off, better suited to display and careful rolling than to being thrown hard across a table. What are geode dice?

Are geode dice made from real stone?

No. The geode effect is hand-painted and cast in resin, not cut from rock. If you want genuine stone dice, look at our gemstone dice instead — those are machined from real material and feel quite different in the hand.

Will my set look exactly like the photos?

Close, but not identical. Each core is painted individually, so the crystal pattern, seam angles and depth of colour vary between dice and between sets. Small variations and the occasional tiny bubble in the resin are characteristic of handmade inclusion dice rather than faults.

Both layer a decorative core inside clear resin. Geode dice imitate a crystal cavity specifically, while art core sets cover a wider range of scenes and effects suspended in a clear shell.

Are sharp edge geode dice good for rolling?

They roll well on a tray or mat, but sharp edge resin is less forgiving than rounded dice — corners can chip if thrown hard onto a hard surface. Most people treat a geode set as a display and special-occasion set. A dice tray is a sensible companion.
