Saving throws are crucial in D&D for determining whether a character succeeds in resisting a spell, trap, poison, or various other dangerous situations. Each saving throw is tied to one of the character’s ability scores: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma. The difficulty of a saving throw is set by a Difficulty Class (DC), and players must roll a d20 and add the relevant ability modifier (and any other relevant bonuses) to see if they meet or exceed the DC.

Advantage and disadvantage are mechanics that alter how players roll dice for checks, attacks, and saving throws. When a player has advantage, they roll two d20s and take the higher result, which increases the chance of succeeding on a task. Conversely, disadvantage involves rolling two d20s and taking the lower result, which makes failure more likely. These mechanics add a strategic element to gameplay, influencing decisions based on the character's or party's situation.

Different weapons and spells in D&D use different types of dice to calculate damage, which adds variety and strategy to combat decisions. For example, a dagger uses a d4 for damage, while a greatsword uses 2d6. This choice impacts not just the potential damage output but also the consistency of that damage. Weapons using multiple dice, like the greatsword, tend to have less variance in damage compared to those using a single die, influencing weapon choice based on player and character preferences and combat tactics.
