Are Liquid Core Dice Balanced? A Comprehensive Look

If you're a tabletop gamer, you know that dice are an essential part of the experience. They bring an element of chance and probability to the game, determining the outcomes of various actions and events. There are numerous types of dice available on the market, each with their own unique characteristics and design. One type of dice that has gained popularity in recent years is liquid core dice.

But are liquid core dice truly balanced? This is a question that has been the subject of much debate within the gaming community. In this article, we will take an in-depth look at liquid core dice to understand whether they are truly balanced and suitable for use in tabletop gaming.

What are Liquid Core Dice?

Liquid core dice are dice that are filled with a liquid, typically distilled water, and sealed inside a clear, resin casing. The liquid inside the dice is dyed with colour, mixed with mica powders or ink, to not only create a stunning visual effect, but to also make it easier to read the numbers on the dice.

Although the concept behind liquid core dice was purely for aesthetics, the moving core can create some intriguing rolls, as the weight of the liquid will shift as the dice is rolled, causing the dice to not settle on any specific number more often than another.

Liquid core dice are available in various sizes and shapes, just like regular dice. They can be used for any game that requires the roll of a dice, from tabletop roleplaying games like Dungeons and Dragons to spicing up board games like Monopoly. However we do not recommend taking Liquid core dice to your local casino!

Advantages of Liquid Core Dice

One of the major advantages of liquid core dice is their visual appeal. The liquid inside the dice creates a mesmerising effect as it moves around inside the dice when it is rolled. This can add an extra layer of excitement to the game, particularly for those playing a spellcaster in their favourite TTRPG.

Another benefit of liquid core dice is that they are relatively easy to read. The liquid inside the dice helps to differentiate and highlight the numbers on the dice, making it easier to see what number was rolled. This can be especially helpful for people with visual impairments or for those playing in low light conditions.

Disadvantages of Liquid Core Dice

Despite their visual appeal and ease of reading, liquid core dice are not without their drawbacks. One of the main concerns is the issue of durability with liquid core dice. The dice are sealed inside a resin casing, but that casing is not always as sturdy as traditional dice. There is a risk that the dice could break or leak.

Resin is typically an incredibly strong substance when cured, however due to the liquid sphere taking up most of the volume of the dice, this can lead to having a slightly thinner shell of resin.

However! Don't let that put you off, as long as the resin is thick enough and you look after your beautifully crafted dice, this will not be an issue at all.

So, Are Liquid Core Dice Balanced?

While it is true that there are concerns about the balance of liquid core dice, these concerns are largely unfounded. The weight of the liquid inside the dice does shift as the dice is rolled, and it does so chaotically. This ensures that all numbers on the dice have an equal chance of being rolled.

In fact, many gamers have reported that liquid core dice are actually more balanced than traditional dice.

The movement of the liquid inside the dice helps to not only smooth out any potential bias of imperfections in the resin casing. Resulting in a more consistent and balanced roll.

But the liquid also moves in such a chaotic fashion at the centre of the dice, it is next to impossible for the dice to hold any kind of bias.

So, are liquid core dice balanced and suitable for use in tabletop gaming? After considering the pros and cons, the answer for quality liquid core dice is a a solid yes from us, however we again do not recommend them for playing in a casino or in an environment with heavy regulated rules. For 99% of all casual gameplay, there is no harm in using Liquid Core Dice whatsoever.

Does the salt water test work on Liquid Core Dice?

No. This method only helps to identify invisible cavities within other styles of dice that may cause a shift of weight. Such as an air bubble within an opaque resin or acrylic set. It will be entirely ineffective with a set of liquid core dice that has a volume of liquid at its core please don't soak your precious DND Dice in salt water!
